In collaboration with lead epilepsy neurologist John Archer, we are developing DBS as an emerging treatment of medication resistant epilepsy. We recently completed an NHMRC funded randomised controlled trial where patients with Lennox-Gastaut epilepsy were implanted with DBS into a novel brain target (the centromedian parafascicular nucleus of the thalamus) using specialised brain imaging as guidance. Seizures were significantly reduced using objective outcome measures. We are developing methods to apply DBS to other forms of epilepsy.
